The University of Namibia seeks to fill a faculty position at its Main Campus in Windhoek for an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Physics, specialising in (mm-wave) Radio Astronomy.
The chosen candidate will take a leading role in developing the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) science programme, as well as in determining the technical specifications and overseeing the implementation of the telescope. This work will be done in collaboration with the international AMT team. The candidate is also expected to establish a robust research programme for single-dish science and potential VLBI (Global mm-VLBI array, European VLBI Network, African VLBI Network, etc.) science, extending beyond the scope of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Additionally, involvement in projects such as SKA and MeerKAT would be advantageous, with potential engagement in VHE gamma-ray astronomy with H.E.S.S. and optical astronomy also possible. Membership in both the EHT and H.E.S.S. collaborations is a possibility, and UNAM staff members regularly have access to time on the 11m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT).
In addition to research responsibilities, the candidate will be required to effectively teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses/modules in Physics, such as Quantum Mechanics, Astrophysics, Modern Physics, and others.
Kindly note that while the position is permanent within the Department, permanent appointments of non-Namibian citizens at the University of Namibia are prohibited by law. Thus, appointments of non-Namibian citizens will be on a contract basis for 5-year terms, renewable at the end of each 5 years. However, for outstanding candidates, the University may consider appointing them at the (Full) Professor level.
Regarding the AMT project, an additional part-time (≤50%) position is available at the Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer level, funded through the ERC BlackHolistic project. The conditions for this position are generally similar to those mentioned above but are more negotiable and limited to the project period ending in September 2029.
