The South African National Space Agency is looking to admit final year BEng/BSc or Masters students in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Electronics into the International Space Weather Camp 2023. The International Space Weather Camp offers this unique opportunity to students from South Africa, USA and Germany to learn about space weather and an exciting new study about the study of the sun and its influence on space and the earth’s upper atmosphere in addition to solar impacts on space.

Previously known as the JSWSC, Joint Space Weather Summer Camp was born through the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the University of Rostock and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The collaboration was then extended to the South African National Space Agency in 2015.

The Camp consists of a series of lectures, hands-on projects and other interesting activities. The content of the lectures covers various aspects of Space Weather, consisting of cosmic ray particle transport theory, plasma physics, solar physics, heliospheric physics, computer simulations for modelling and understanding local Space Weather, and the impact on Earth’s atmosphere, satellites, and space. The ISWC will take place in two parts, with the first segment taking place at the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Hermanus facility from 24 June to 7 July 2023.

The second part will be hosted by the University of Alabama in Huntsville, USA, from 8 – 23 July 2023. Successful applicants are expected to take part in both parts. The ISWC offers students a powerful platform to network with students and researchers from around the globe. During the course of the Camp, students will learn about historical and current developments of space activities in South Africa, Germany, and the USA.
