The NATO Strategic Direction-South Hub (NSD-S Hub) invite subject matter experts and organisations from the Middle East and North Africa worldwide to submit a paper on “MENA Space Capabilities and Security Challenges: Applications to disaster management”.

Satellites provide critical infrastructure for data communication for essential civilian and military applications. In the Middle East and Africa, space capabilities can promote socio-economic development. Over the past decade, about 30 space organisations have been established in Africa, and more than 40 satellites have been launched. In the Middle East, investment in space technology and capabilities has been one of the routes towards economic diversification.

Ideas and concepts to be developed through the call for papers:
  • Assess the relevance of space capabilities in the management of natural and human-made disasters, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa;
  • Raise awareness of the importance of space-based information for tackling various hazards;
  • Identify opportunities for improving human security domains through space applications; and
  • Identify a forum to provide applications to Disaster Management, to further exchange information voluntarily, to protect technologies and technological development in the space industry (prevent brain drain).
